hydroponic Farming at Cardona Farms

Cardona Farms is a hydroponic farm using a container system called a Greenery S, manufactured by Freight Farms. Nestled on the idyllic Sonoma coast, we grow nutritious greens and vegetables all year round. What makes this farm unique is its state-of-the-art controlled environment agriculture (CEA) that gives you complete control of the growing environment. The patented vertical paneling makes it possible to maximize space, and plant up to 2.5 acres worth of greens! The 40’ x 8’ container houses a nursery station where seedlings are raised, a cultivation area where the plants mature, and a work space for supplies – or for additional space to grow microgreens!

High efficiency LEDs mimic the sun’s energy and day/night cycles, which are carefully controlled to maximize ideal light exposure for consistent and healthy growth. Only two colors from the light spectrum are utilized in this growing process: Blue light for strong plants and dark foliage, and Red lights for large, leafy plants.

The precise nature of controlled environment agriculture gives way to extremely efficient water usage. The recirculation of water within the farm is what makes it possible to use only 5 gallons of water per day – for up to 13,000 plants! Because there is no soil, any water not absorbed by the roots flows back into the system and is recycled into the tanks.
